Why We Only Use Natural Treats
in the HTC Box
When we started Happy Tails Club, we made one rule before we made any others: if we would not feed it to our own dogs, it does not go in the box. That one rule ended up deciding everything.
Most treats are not what they look like
Walk into any pet shop in Amsterdam and pick up a bag of dog treats. Flip it over and read the ingredients. You will usually find a short list of real protein at the top, followed by something like: maize starch, glycerine, humectants, colourings, preservatives, flavour enhancers.
None of those things will kill your dog. But none of them belong there either. They are there to extend shelf life, reduce production cost, and make a low-quality ingredient look and smell like a high-quality one. Your dog deserves better than that, and you deserve to know exactly what you are giving them.
If we would not feed it to our own dogs, it does not go in the box. That one rule ended up deciding everything.
What "natural" actually means to us
The word natural gets used loosely in the pet food industry. For us it has a specific definition: single-ingredient, EU-certified, and traceable to its source. Every treat in the Happy Tails Club box meets all three criteria.
The Chicken Training Bites contain one thing: chicken. The Beef Training Bites contain one thing: beef lung. The Turkey Strips contain one thing: turkey. You can read the full ingredient list in two seconds because there is only one ingredient to read.
Every supplier we work with is certified under EU pet food regulations. That means their production facilities, sourcing standards, and labelling are independently verified. We do not source from outside the EU for the core box.
We know where every treat comes from. Not just the country, but the producer. That is also why our Mystery Treat works the way it does: we announce the country in advance so you know where it is coming from, and we reveal the brand on delivery. No hidden supply chains.
What is inside every box right now
Here is exactly what is in the first Happy Tails Club box:
Plus the Mystery Treat: a new small European brand every month, announced by country in advance and revealed on delivery.
Why it matters for your dog specifically
Dogs metabolise food differently to humans. Additives and artificial preservatives that are technically safe in small quantities can accumulate over time, particularly in dogs that eat treats daily as part of training. Artificial colourings have no nutritional value at all. They exist for the human buying the treat, not for the dog eating it.
High-protein, single-ingredient treats are significantly more effective for training. The protein density keeps your dog focused and motivated. The simplicity means you know exactly what you are rewarding them with. No hidden carbohydrates spiking energy, no fillers diluting the reward.
If your dog has a known sensitivity or intolerance, single-ingredient treats are the safest option by far. There is nothing to react to except the protein itself.
We source from small European producers on purpose
The big brands have scale. We have something more useful: relationships with small producers who care deeply about what they make. Every month we feature a Mystery Treat from a small European brand in a different country. We have found producers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain who are making extraordinary natural treats that most Amsterdam dog owners have never heard of.
That is the whole point. We give these producers visibility and give your dog something genuinely new and excellent every month. The country is announced in advance. The brand is revealed on delivery. Because great things are worth waiting for.
The standard we hold ourselves to
We hand-pack every box ourselves. That means before each batch ships, Leo or Maxim opens every product, checks the smell, the texture, and the ingredient label. We have turned down suppliers whose products looked fine on paper but did not pass the nose test. We have dropped lines mid-season because a producer changed their recipe without telling us.
It is not scalable in the way a spreadsheet would like. But it is the only way to guarantee that what goes in your dog's box is genuinely worth giving them.
Try it yourself
The best way to understand the difference is to give your dog a treat from the HTC box and watch their reaction. No manufactured flavour enhancement. Just protein, properly dried, from a traceable European source.
